Wedding bells

19 May

Usually you only hear from me when I’m travelling. But this blog is about a journey of a different nature. Tomorrow  I’m off to Quadra Island with my dad, both sons, many of my elder son’s friends, and his lovely bride to be – Paula. And a large assortment of other family members. We are headed to Gowlland Harbour Resort for a wedding because Fly and Paula are tying the knot. It’s been a busy few days doing all manner of last minute preparations. A slide show, a quiz, building, staining and painting signs, organizing and creating many lawn games, picking flowers and arranging bouquets, all the clothes to be measured and fitted, the umbrellas and rubber boots, the kegs of beer and the rings – I sure hope someone has remembered the rings! Dog sitters for all three dogs. A cancelled fire works show due to dry conditions. A broken down vehicle in Merrit – so now the DJ is sort of hitch hiking with all his gear to Vancouver…… A promise of a three ferry wait to get to Quadra tomorrow due to a ball tournament – really? But all is calm – reasonably. Months of planning for a two day event to celebrate a solid relationship. The challenge of dealing with a last minute crisis or two. I can but feel the joy. Fly and Paula make a wonderful couple. As I climb into bed tonight I couldn’t be more content.

I was up early and out into the garden picking flowers, then arranging, then more picking and arranging. Suddenly it was time to leave for the ferry! The three ferry wait was only one for dad and me and two for Fly, Paula and Kyle. Pretty soon we were settling into the lovely Gowlland Harbour. The lawn games were set up, the beverages began flowing and the games began. We all enjoyed a beautiful afternoon as guests began arriving.Almost everyone invited has made this a two day event! With the marriage ceremony rehearsal completed, more beverages flowed until dinner – we all ordered our own off the fabulous menu. The wine and the conversation flowed. A few guests are staying on their boats now tied up at the resort’s dock. For some the night continued into the wee hours but dad and I both turned in just before mid night.

Fly and several friends went golfing. Fly is reported to have not had his best game. Seems he was a tad preoccupied! Kyle went for a kayak and got back just in time to change. Lawn games continued, conversation continued, naps were had, anticipation and excitement grew. By three the groom and his entourage were ready to make their first public appearances in dressy clothes – ever – I’m pretty sure. They sure looked very fine.  I was a proud mum walking with fly down to the point where he was about to marry  the lovely Paula. There had been no sign of the bride or her attendants for hours!

Friends and family gathered. The moment everyone awaits at a wedding happened. Paula and her mum appeared on the slope above and made their way down to the point. Paula was stunning in her dress. The ceremony was beautiful in terms of location and the vows given to each other. A champagne toast on the lawn followed. Then applies up in the lodge. The subsequent evening of celebration – dinner, speaches, the first dances, cake cutting, then the real party – in fact – the entire day was perfect in every way. Here’s a few pictures. As you will see they make a very handsome couple. Fly and Paula put together a weekend of  festivities which is memorable for all the best reasons.

Am I a proud mum and happy to have a daughter in law like Paula — oh yes!
